Birth Control Device Lawsuits

There are many different types of birth control methods available for women to use, but some are safer and more effective than others. The manufacturer of a birth control medication or device can be held liable if their product causes harm to someone who uses it. For some of the riskier medications and devices, there have been many lawsuits, some of which resulted in claims adding up to billions of dollars.

Birth Control Pill Risks

While birth control pills are a convenient way to prevent pregnancy, they often do increase the risk of having certain side effects. For example, women who take the birth control pills Yasmin and Yaz are from two to three times as likely to develop a venous thromboembolism, or blood clots. The same risk exists with the NuvaRing implant, which delivers similar medication. There are even some types of birth control pills that do not contain enough hormone medication to be effective at preventing pregnancy. Some of these were noted to be Lo/Ovral-28 and Norgestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol.

Other Devices That May Cause Injury

There have been various complications with many other birth control devices that women have used. IUDs, or intrauterine devices, are T-shaped devices that are inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy by preventing the sperm from fertilizing the egg. Many IUDs have caused unwanted side effects or complications from the drugs or hormones that they release. One popular example is the Mirena IUD, which releases the hormone called levonorgestrel. The hormone itself has caused many side effects, and with an IUD, there is always the risk of migration of the device or even perforation of the uterus.
