What Is The Lawsuit Against Roundup?

Roundup is a popular weed killer that people throughout the U.S. have used in their yards and gardens for many years. It contains an active ingredient known as glyphosate, which is a non-selective herbicide which will kill nearly any plant by interfering with an enzyme pathway that is needed for the plant to grow and survive. In and of itself, pure glyphosate is not that toxic, but other ingredients are added to it to make it absorb more effectively into the plants.

How Dangerous is Glyphosate?

Roundup, which contains glyphosate, was developed by the large agricultural and chemical company, Monsanto in 1970. Since that time, there has been much contentious debate about whether or not Roundup and its active ingredient, glyphosate, are actually the cause of various cancers. However, in 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC, classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic in humans.” In addition, some of the legal research done in Roundup lawsuits has uncovered internal Monsanto documents, that show attempts to manipulate scientific studies and media information to make Roundup sound safer.

Blood Cancers Named in Roundup Lawsuits

There have, as of this date, been thousands of lawsuits filed against Monsanto and Bayer, who later acquired Monsanto, over Roundup. Since the beginning of these lawsuits, more and more links are being found between exposure to Roundup and various types of blood cancers, such as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, or NHL. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, hairy cell leukemia, and several other blood cancers have also been named in Roundup lawsuits. Those most at risk are people who work with this weed-killer on a regular basis, like landscapers or groundskeepers.
