Latest Developments on the Roundup Lawsuit
If you stay up to watch late night television once in awhile, you’ve probably seen the commercials about Roundup lawsuits. Roundup is the brand name for an herbicide manufactured by the chemical company, Monsanto, which merged with Bayer, the famous pharmaceutical company, in 2016. The commercials will tell you about all the patients who have developed cancer as a result of the use of Roundup, which contains an active ingredient called glyphosate. This herbicide is used on lawns, in gardens, in playgrounds, and by farmers on crops. If you or a loved one have been harmed by Roundup, you need to speak with an experienced Houston lawyer as soon as possible.
The Dangers of Glyphosate
Glyphosate is a potent herbicide that enters into a plant’s amino acid synthesis cycle as a sort of impostor amino acid, interfering with normal plant enzyme production and causing the plant to die. In agriculture, it is aimed at invasive plants that interfere with crops, but it also gets into the environment and can harm wildlife, other “non-weed” plants, and people. Extensive research has shown that glyphosate is linked to human cancers, most notably non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), leukemia, and B-cell lymphoma. The WHO, or World Health Organization, has stated that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic”, or cancer-causing.
The Roundup MDL
Since it entered the market in 1974, there have been thousands of lawsuits related to Roundup. These began in 2015 and still continue today. One major victory for those affected occurred in May of 2019, when a state court awarded the plaintiffs $2 billion. Then, in June of 2020, Bayer-Monsanto agreed to pay an additional $10 billion to settle 92,000 more pending lawsuits. Class action lawsuits like the ones for Roundup are often consolidated into groups called multi-district litigation, or MDL, districts so that one judge takes care of all the lawsuits. In October of 2016, such an MDL was created for all pending and future Roundup lawsuits. This empowered the plaintiff’s attorneys to share resources and made it easier for plaintiffs to sue. Believe it or not, Roundup is still available for purchase on the market.
